A few words from Scott

I believe there is more possibility in every human being than any of us truly realise.

Sometimes we just need the right person, the right opportunity or the right experience to help us see it.

That’s what SCCU has become.

Helping People Discover What’s Possible.

Not telling people who they should be. Not deciding what success should look like for them. And not believing that education begins and ends with a qualification.

Because I’ve come to realise that the qualification is often a byproduct of something much more important:

The person you become, or perhaps discover, along the way.

The confidence you find. The things you learn about yourself. The beliefs you challenge. The ability you didn’t know you had. The doors you suddenly realise aren’t closed after all.

The qualification matters, of course.

But it’s often just the visible part.

The real transformation is the person walking away with it.

So, where did it all start?

Like most things do, as a thought.

Back in 2010, in a bedroom at my mum’s house.

I was working a full-time job, a part-time job and trying to build SCCU around the edges.

We started by delivering physical education and wellbeing in primary schools, and my motivation at the time was actually pretty simple. I wanted to earn enough money to look after my mum, myself, my future family and the people I cared about.

Actually, the older I’ve got, the more I’ve realised I care about humanity as a whole.

SCCU grew. We evolved. We made mistakes. We learned. We met thousands of people and heard their stories.

We saw what happened when somebody believed in someone, gave them an opportunity or helped them see something in themselves they couldn’t see before.

And somewhere along that journey, my understanding of what we were actually doing began to change.

I realised education could be about so much more than teaching people things.

It could help people discover themselves.

I’ve become slightly obsessed with understanding human beings.

Why we think the way we think. Why we behave the way we behave. What shapes us. What holds us back. What makes us come alive. And what becomes possible when somebody starts to understand themselves a little better.

Because for all the things we spend our lives learning about, surely we are one of the most interesting things we’ll ever learn about.

Funny enough, a college lecturer once wrote that I had a “thirst for knowledge”.

I certainly didn’t recognise that person at the time.

Another school report said:

“If Scott put as much effort into his schoolwork as he does his football, he would be a genius.”

I’m still waiting for the genius bit to kick in.

But they were right about something.

Where we put our energy matters.

And sometimes other people can see something in us before we’re capable of seeing it ourselves.

I think great education can do exactly that.

It can hold up a mirror. Create an opportunity. Spark curiosity. Build confidence. Open a door.

And sometimes introduce somebody to a possibility for their life that they simply couldn’t see before.

That’s the SCCU we’re building.

Not simply an organisation that delivers qualifications, courses or programmes.

We want to create environments, experiences and opportunities that help people discover more about themselves and what’s possible for their lives.

We’ve seen what can happen when we get that right.

People arrive believing certain doors are closed to them and leave with new confidence, skills, qualifications, careers, independence and choices they didn’t think they had.

Sometimes it’s a qualification.

Sometimes it’s a job.

Sometimes it’s simply somebody seeing themselves differently for the first time.

That’s the bit that matters.

Because SCCU has given me, and all the brilliant people who have joined this journey, something much more valuable than a business.

It’s given us a platform for good.

And now we’re thinking bigger.

The more I’ve thought about education, the more I’ve started to wonder whether we’ve misunderstood part of it.

We’ve built systems around what people need to know, what qualifications they need to achieve and what jobs they need to do.

All of those things matter.

But perhaps we’ve missed the most important part.

The person.

Who am I?

Why am I the way I am?

What has shaped me?

What am I curious about?

What am I capable of?

What matters to me?

What could my life look like?

Imagine giving every person the people, environments, experiences and technology to spend a lifetime discovering the answers.

That’s the future I want us to help build.

Through Scott Free, I’m exploring some of the bigger questions I’ve spent much of my life thinking about and bringing together the ideas, wisdom and discoveries that might help us understand ourselves, each other and this strange experience of being human a little better.

Through NUBU, we’re developing the technology to make learning and personal discovery more human, more personal and more accessible.

And through SCCU, we bring that belief into the real world through people, relationships, education, environments, opportunities and experiences that can genuinely change the direction of someone’s life.

Different expressions.

One belief.

One mission.

Helping People Discover What’s Possible.

Because I don’t believe our job is to tell people who they should become.

Our job is to help create the environments in which they can discover that for themselves.

Maybe they discover a career.

Maybe they discover a talent.

Maybe they discover confidence.

Maybe they discover something they love.

Maybe they discover a completely different way of looking at themselves or the world.

And maybe, somewhere along the way, they discover they’re capable of far more than they ever believed.

Perhaps that’s what SCCU has been doing all along.

We just understand it better now.

And what does SCCU actually stand for?

I still get asked this.

The truth is nowhere near as impressive as you might imagine.

When we started, my mum suggested an acronym based on the people we supported:

Schools. Colleges. Clubs. Universities.

And SCCU was born.

I’ve never particularly loved that explanation.

So how about:

Scott’s Carefully Created Universe.

Which, looking at everything we’re building now, has turned out to be slightly more accurate than I realised.

I also opened a fortune cookie when I was about 16 that said:

“None of us are as clever as all of us.”

For some reason, that’s always stuck with me.

Years later, I think that little piece of paper probably understood SCCU before I did.

We’re here to learn together.

To grow together.

To discover together.

And hopefully, in our own little way, leave this world a little better than we found it.

We’ve come a long way from that bedroom at my mum’s house.

And I genuinely feel like we’re only just getting started.

Because ultimately, SCCU was never meant to be about me.

I’m just lucky enough to be here for part of the journey.

One day it’ll be my stop.

But the train carries on.

The people we’ve helped will help others. The people we’ve inspired will inspire others. New people will bring new ideas, ask better questions and take all of this somewhere I can’t even imagine today.

And that’s exactly how it should be.

Because if we’ve built this properly, the mission will never belong to one person.

It belongs to everyone who chooses to carry it forward.

Helping People Discover What’s Possible.
